Ex-convict Chavis Douglas is back behind bars tonight after a traffic stop for running a stop sign revealed that he was driving his pickup truck with five pounds of marijuana at his side.
Hermitage Precinct Flex Officer Barry Demonbreun, who was proactively working in the Priest Lake area due to recent home burglaries, pulled Douglas over after watching him run the stop sign at Kothe Way and Forest View Drive. Officer Demonbreun immediately smelled marijuana as he approached the pickup truck. When asked about the odor, Douglas handed over a small baggie containing about two grams of marijuana. Demonbreun inquired whether that was all, prompting Douglas to acknowledge that the blue fabric bag beside him contained significantly more. The bag held six freezer bags of processed marijuana weighing 5½ pounds.
“This is a tremendous example of an outstanding felony drug case made through Officer Demonbreun’s exceptional efforts to prevent burglaries in Priest Lake neighborhoods,” Chief Ronal Serpas said.
Douglas, of Ember Lake Drive, is charged with possession of marijuana for resale in a drug free zone (within 1,000 feet of Ezell Harding School), possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving on a suspended license.
Douglas was convicted of child abuse in June 2009 (11 month-29 day sentence), unlawful gun possession by a convicted felon in 2004 (two-year sentence), possession of cocaine for resale in 2004 (nine-year sentence), and possession of cocaine for resale in 2001 (three-year sentence).
