Metro Police patch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 10, 2009

North Precinct detectives this evening charged convicted murderer and parolee Steven Jefferson with criminal homicide for killing a woman inside a room he had rented at the Bordeaux Motel, 3230 Clarksville Pike.

Officers were called to the motel at 8:50 a.m. after a person there discovered the body of Suzette Covington, 36. She appeared to have suffered trauma to her head. Drug paraphernalia was also found in the room.

Officers learned that Jefferson, 49, had rented the room and, after consulting with residents at a half way house where Jefferson was supposed to be staying, located him at a local restaurant where he worked. Jefferson was taken to the North Precinct for questioning and admitted to strangling Covington during the night.

Jefferson was convicted of second-degree murder in 1991 and was sentenced to 35 years. He was paroled in August and registered with the Metropolitan Police Department as an ex-convict on August 11.

Jefferson is being held in the Metro Jail tonight in lieu of $1 million bond.
