The man killed in Sunday night’s single-car crash on Edmondson Pike near Briarwood Drive is identified as Matthew D. Wiley, 28, of Smyrna.
Wiley was driving a 1998 Nissan Maxima southbound on Edmondson Pike at 7:45 p.m. when, for reasons unknown, it went over the right curb, struck a mailbox and then a utility pole. Weather may have been a factor, as it was raining when officers arrived at the crash scene. Wiley was not wearing a seatbelt.
Alcohol involvement is unknown. An empty beer container and an unopened can of beer were found in the car.
