North Precinct detectives this morning are pursuing active leads in their efforts to apprehend the gunman responsible for Monday night’s murder of 21-year-old Andreus Taylor at Tennessee State University’s Gentry Center.
Taylor, of Lake Forest Drive in LaVergne, had just exited the building at the conclusion of Maplewood High School’s graduation ceremony when the gunman opened fire on him from the lobby doorway. Another individual held the door open for the gunman. Several shots were fired. Taylor was hit in the left upper body and was transported to Centennial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. A second individual, Charles Craig, 19, suffered a graze wound to his left arm. He was treated and released from a local hospital.
The gunman fled the campus in the midst of the confusion and hysteria.
Five extra-duty Metro police officers worked the graduation and were in the arena part of the building when the shooting took place. Tennessee State University police had two officers in the building and several others in a nearby parking area.
Chief Ronal Serpas has directed the leadership of the department’s Field Operations Bureau to look closely at other Metro high school graduation plans for this week and to enhance the police department’s presence at those ceremonies as needed.
