FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 1, 2009

North Precinct detectives are working to identify the gunman who late this morning shot two construction workers inside a duplex at 1616 23rd Avenue North.

The gunman, described as black and in his late teens or early 20’s, was wearing a dark ninja-type mask, a red shirt and blue jeans when he entered the building. He demanded worker David Ashford’s wallet. Ashford complied and tried to run when he was shot in the foot. Worker David Zerby, carrying a crowbar, entered the duplex. The gunman demanded his wallet and shot Zerby in the chest and arm. The suspect was last seen running toward 22nd Avenue.

Zerby, 49, of Murfreesboro, was not critically injured and is being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Ashford, 38, of Nashville, was treated and released from Vanderbilt.

Anyone with information on the gunman’s identity is urged to contact North Precinct Investigations at 862-7901 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward.
