The woman found murdered this morning inside an abandoned duplex at 1729 Herman Street is believed to be Racquel Elena Johnson, 18, of Hillside Avenue, a TSU student who was last heard from by her mother Sunday night and who was reported as a missing person on Tuesday. Positive identification is pending.
Johnson’s mother said that she last heard from her daughter at 8:30 p.m. Sunday while Racquel was working at Starbucks inside Opry Mills Mall. Her mother reported Racquel as a missing person to TSU police on Tuesday morning. Metro police quickly assumed the investigation and recovered Racquel’s 2001 gold Chevrolet Impala from the parking lot of Rivergate Mall near Dillard’s on Tuesday night. Homicide detectives continue to pursue strong leads related to the car.
Based on assessment of the murder scene on Herman Street, detectives believe the body had been inside the vacant duplex most, if not all, of this week. The victim suffered obvious trauma. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.
Anyone with information on Racquel Johnson’s disappearance, or anyone seeing her 2001 gold Chevrolet Impala between Sunday night and Tuesday night, is urged to contact detectives at 880-2928 or Crime Stoppers at 74-Crime.
