South Precinct Crime Suppression Unit detectives during the night arrested five employees of three separate Lafayette Street markets for selling glass tubes commonly used as crack pipes to undercover police operatives who, during their purchases, clearly referred to the tubes as instruments for drug use. 

The two-week investigation resulted in the execution of search warrants last night at:

• Fast Service Market, 175 Lafayette Street, where officers seized 1,056 glass tubes, two large boxes of steel wool filter commonly used in crack pipes, $6,735 cash, 182 one-ounce gold coins, and 50 pipes commonly used to smoke marijuana.  Charged with felony drug paraphernalia distribution were Mohamed Y. Sankari, 35, Ahmed Sankari, 39, and Mohamed N. Sankari, 44.  Bond for each was set at $5,000.
• EZ Market, 157 Lafayette Street, where officers seized 43 glass tubes, 50 steel wool filters, 36 sets of digital scales, two pistols, $6,157 cash, and two grams of marijuana.  Charged with felony drug paraphernalia distribution and marijuana possession was Haimanot Aredo, 38.  His bond was set at $15,000.
• Lucky's Market, 141 Lafayette Street, where officers seized 193 glass tubes, two large boxes of steel wool filter, one pistol, and $1732 cash.  Charged with felony drug paraphernalia distribution was Sultan Masood Hussaini, 37.  His bond was set at $5,000.

“Investigations such as this are very important to attack cocaine and other drug use in crime and violence hotspots,” Chief Ronal Serpas said.
