The mother of a five-year-old student at Tom Joy Elementary School is charged with felony drug possession and child endangerment after her son brought baggies containing marijuana and cocaine to school this morning.
Arthea Burroughs, 27, called school officials just after 9 a.m. to tell them she would be picking her son up from school. She did not give an explanation. A short time later, the boy pulled the drugs out of his pants pockets to show his teacher and his nine classmates. Police were notified and the school was placed on lock-down.
East Precinct Detective Sergeant Anna-Maria Williams interviewed the child who told her he had taken the drugs out of a dresser drawer in his mother’s bedroom. Detectives believe he was unaware of how dangerous the drugs were and simply brought them to school to show his classmates. The children were not injured. Recovered were 7.6 grams of marijuana and two grams of cocaine.
The boy’s mother was arrested at her apartment in the 500 block of Joseph Avenue. She is charged with felony cocaine possession, unlawful marijuana possession, and reckless endangerment. She is being held in lieu of $12,000 bond.
Warrants charging felony cocaine possession, unlawful marijuana possession, and reckless endangerment have been issued for the mother’s brother, Tadarl Burroughs, 28, who also lives in the Joseph Avenue apartment. Anyone seeing Tadarl Burroughs or knowing his whereabouts is urged to call Emergency Dispatch at 862-8600 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
