West Flex and Directed Patrol officers working on a crime reduction initiative broke up a counterfeiting ring early Thursday morning following a simple traffic stop.
The driver of a rental car was stopped for not using his turn signal at the intersection of Sawyer Brown Road and Highway 70 at 1:30 a.m. Officers detected a strong odor of marijuana. Seized in a subsequent search of the car were a counterfeit $100 dollar bill, two photo copiers, materials used to bleach lower denomination bills in order to turn them into larger denominations, and two grams of marijuana.
Further investigation led officers to the Days Inn at 211 North 1st Street where Clarence Woods, 22, and Chiari Hardy, 25, both of Memphis, were found in a room with two authentic $100 dollar bills that had been copied to create the counterfeit money. Woods, Hardy, and a passenger from the initial traffic stop, Brandon Perry, 25, also of Memphis, are charged with criminal simulation. Hardy and Woods are being held in lieu of $10,000 dollars bond each. Perry, also charged with marijuana possession, is being held in lieu of $12,000 bond.
