FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 11, 2008

The driver of a stolen 2008 Dodge Caravan was killed after he crashed the minivan into a house at 3512 Lealand Lane early Friday morning.

The 22-year-old man, believed to be homeless, stole the Caravan from the Exxon Tiger Market at 1111 Broadway a short time before the fatal accident. The Dodge had been left running, unattended, with the keys in the ignition.

He was traveling east on Draughon Avenue, drove through a stop sign, and crossed over Lealand Lane before striking the house at 3:40 a.m. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Excessive speed and failure to maintain his lane are contributing factors to this fatal crash. Evidence of alcohol involvement was also found at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
