The Metro Police DepartmentWednesday morning will destroy 1,405 guns, including rifles, shotguns and pistols, which have been in the department's possession for the past several years.
Many of the weapons were seized during arrests forunlawful gun possession, primarily during 2002 and 2003. Some of the guns were turned over to officers as found property. Weapons associated with homicide investigations and other serious felonies are not part of the destruction, which is taking place pursuant to a court order.
"The good news is these guns will never find their way into the hands of criminals or be used in crimes of violence," Chief Ronal Serpas said.
The police department destroys firearms one to two times a year. The department does not sell seized or confiscated guns.
