Alert police work by East Precinct Officer Jack Stanley early this morning led to the arrest of two men minutes after an armed robbery on Church Street at 2nd Avenue.

Mitchell York, 21, of Sylvan Street, is accused of robbing a 21-year-old man at 4:10 a.m. The victim, a DJ at Graham Central Station on 2nd Avenue, had just walked his friends to their cars on Church Street when York approached him, asked to use his cell phone, and robbed him at gunpoint. Marcus Edwards, 22, of Cumberland Station Boulevard, admitted he struck the victim in the head with a beer bottle. York and Edwards fled in a Toyota Avalon.

Officer Stanley spotted the getaway car, driven by York, at 4:20 a.m. near South 5th Street. He activated his emergency equipment on Spring Street and attempted to stop the car. York drove off at a high rate of speed, crossing the Jefferson Street Bridge, before crashing into a building at 1037 Jefferson Street. York and Edwards, the front seat passenger, were both taken into custody. The victim identified Edwards and York as the men who robbed him.

York is charged with aggravated robbery and evading arrest. He is being held in lieu of $146,999 bond. York’s arrest history reflects drug possession and vehicle theft charges.

Edwards is charged with aggravated robbery and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond. His arrest history reflects charges for theft, evading arrest, and marijuana possession.
