A teenager, believed to be the second suspect involved in the brutal pistol whipping of a woman during a robbery outside her Portland Avenue home March 3rd, was arrested Friday night.
Michael Scales, 17, of Beech Avenue, is accused of demanding the 43-year-old victim's purse at gunpoint as she was trying to unlock her front door at 9:15 p.m. The victim refused and was struck on the head and in the face with the gun. Scales allegedly grabbed her purse and ran to a blue Dodge Charger.
A Vanderbilt University police officer spotted the Charger traveling north on 21st Avenue South and knew it matched the description of the robbery getaway car. The Charger slowed when it reached the roundabout at Division and Demonbreun Streets. A passenger, subsequently identified as 18-year-old Nacee Cannon, got out and fled on foot. He was apprehended after a short chase.
Scales continued traveling on Demonbreun Street, crashed at 3rd Avenue South, and fled on foot. A pistol with blood on it was recovered from the Charger. The car was reported stolen on March 1.
Scales is charged in Juvenile Court with especially aggravated robbery.
Cannon is charged with especially aggravated robbery in the Portland Avenue attack and a second count of aggravated robbery for carjacking a 51-year-old man earlier the same day.
