FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 13, 2008

Hermitage Precinct detectives have identified the gunman believed responsible for Wednesday night’s shooting death of 21-year-old Stephen Dejuan Johnson, who was fatally wounded in the head as the car in which he was riding was fired upon while traveling on University Court.

Arrest warrants charging criminal homicide and attempted criminal homicide have been issued against Travis Taylor, 20, who is last known to have lived on Cannon Street. Efforts to locate him continue.

The investigation being led by Detective Johnny Crumby shows that Johnson and three friends were riding through University Court when multiple shots were fired at the rear of their car. Officer Cassandra Del Bosco heard the shots and saw a car with a shattered rear window pull onto Lafayette Street from 1st Avenue South. Officer Del Bosco pulled the car over and discovered that Johnson was fatally wounded in the back seat.

Detectives are investigating whether the shooting is linked to a continuance of an altercation that occurred recently at a local nightclub.

Anyone seeing Travis Taylor or knowing his whereabouts is urged to contact Hermitage Precinct detectives at 862-6993 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME. At the time of the shooting, Taylor was free on $1,000 bond stemming from a February 22 domestic assault arrest. He has convictions for cocaine possession, trespassing, and evading arrest.

Charges against additional persons in relation to Johnson’s murder are possible.
