An eight-year-old student from Ruby Majors Elementary School is recovering from a fractured leg at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital after being struck by an SUV while walking to school at 7:15 a.m. today.
Tristin Poole was walking in a crosswalk from Lakeridge Pass across Bell Road toward Lincoya Bay Drive when he was hit by a Toyota Rav 4 being driven by Clarence Hawkins, 46, of Lakeridge Run. Officers discovered that Hawkins failed to clear the dew from his windows prior to leaving home. He claimed he didn’t see Poole in the crosswalk and thought that he had struck a tree limb.
After hitting the child, Hawkins kept going. He stopped after witnesses kept honking their horns at him.
Hawkins was issued a state misdemeanor citation charging him with failure to use due care while driving for not clearing the dew from his windows.
