West Precinct detectives continue working to identify the second suspect involved in Monday night’s pistol whipping of a woman during a robbery outside her Portland Avenue home.
The 43-year-old victim was trying to unlock her front door at 9:15 p.m. when an armed man came up behind her and demanded her purse. The victim refused and was struck on the head and in the face with the gun. The suspect grabbed her purse and ran to a blue Dodge Charger.
Vanderbilt University Police Sergeant Ricky Burr spotted the Charger traveling north on 21st Avenue South and knew it matched the description of the robbery getaway car. Burr tried to stop the vehicle at Magnolia Avenue. The driver kept going. The Charger slowed when it reached the roundabout at Division and Demonbreun Streets. A passenger, subsequently identified as 18-year-old Nacee Cannon, got out and fled on foot. He was apprehended after a short chase.
The driver continued traveling on Demonbreun Street, crashed at 3rd Avenue South, and fled on foot. Efforts to apprehend him, which included the use of a police dog, were unsuccessful. A pistol with blood on it was recovered from the Charger. The car was reported stolen on March 1.
Cannon is jailed on charges of especially aggravated robbery, evading arrest, and vehicle theft. His bond is set at $280,000.
