A traffic stop in Tucson, Arizona, for running a red light led to the arrest of accused killer Demond Dewayne Beverly, who was returned to Nashville Thursday night.
Beverly, 35, is named in a grand jury indictment charging first-degree murder for the beating and stabbing death of Charles Fredrick Mills. Mills, 45, was found dead in an unused dairy barn in the 5700 block of Pettus Road on January 9, 2006. His hands and feet were bound with duct tape. The decomposed body was not positively identified for a number of weeks.
The investigation was transferred to Cold Case Unit Detective Lee Freeman in November 2006. An anonymous tip corroborated by scientific evidence led to the development of Beverly as a suspect. Beverly was indicted in May 2007 and his name entered into the National Crime Information Center computer system. A check of the computer database during last month’s traffic stop in Tucson showed that Beverly wanted in Nashville. He waived extradition and is jailed without bond pending his arraignment in Criminal Court.
Mills murder is believed to be connected to illegal drug activity. The investigation remains open and additional arrests are expected.
