A Madison man and a state prison inmate on work release are being charged for conspiring to buy more than six pounds of cocaine during a sting set up by West Precinct undercover officers.
Members of the West Precinct Crime Suppression Unit received a tip a week ago that David B. Fletcher, also known as Robert Fletcher, 38, of 201 E. Palestine Avenue, was attempting to arrange a significant drug buy. A police operative told Fletcher such a buy could be arranged. Fletcher said he wanted 15 to 20 pounds of cocaine.
Tuesday afternoon, Fletcher arrived at a Demonbreun Street motel to consummate the deal. He was driven to the motel in a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe by Torrence Reed, 36, a Tennessee Department of Correction inmate. Reed, who was sentenced to 28 years in 2000 for cocaine convictions in Giles County, worked at Madison Motors during the day and wore an electronic monitor. He was incarcerated at night.
Tuesday afternoon, Fletcher went into a motel room with $64,000 cash to make the cocaine buy. Reed circled the parking lot in the Tahoe, which is owned by Madison Motors.
Fletcher told the undercover officers that he wanted to see how well six pounds of cocaine cooked up into crack. He said if the quality was good, he would return to buy nine more pounds. As Fletcher left the motel room with the six pounds of cocaine fronted by the police department, SWAT officers moved in and arrested him. Other SWAT officers prevented Reed from leaving the parking lot and took him into custody. Inside the Tahoe was an additional $86,000. A subsequent search of Reed’s Lexus at Madison Motors yielded $25,000 more.
Fletcher registered with the Metropolitan Police Department as an ex-convict in October 2005 after serving time for a federal drug conviction.
“This is a very significant investigation by Sgt. Gene Donegan’s undercover team,” Chief Ronal Serpas said. “Two men with significant dope histories are implicated in conspiring to push more cocaine onto the streets of Nashville and Middle Tennessee.”
