Metro Police patch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 9, 2008

South Precinct detectives today charged a Tennessee parolee with attempted criminal homicide and especially aggravated robbery in an attack December 15th that left a man shot in the head on railroad tracks near Fogg Street and 7th Avenue South.

James Woods, 36, was arrested December 21st on Allison Street near Wedgewood Avenue for parole violation, misdemeanor marijuana possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was brought from a state prison to the Metro Justice Center this afternoon to be booked.

Woods is charged with shooting Francisco Moreno Ramos, 48, on the railroad tracks during a robbery on the evening of December 15th. Ramos was left for dead and his leg was subsequently run over by a freight train. Ramos, despite a gunshot wound to his head and the loss of part of his right leg, has recovered to the extent that he has now identified Woods from a photo lineup as his assailant.

Found murdered beside Ramos at the railroad tracks December 15th was Jose Coronado, 28. He had been shot to death. Extensive investigation by South Precinct detectives led to the identification of Woods as a person of interest in the murder of Coronado, as well as the December 13th shooting death of Brandon Coons in the 900 block of 6th Avenue South, and the December 19th shooting death of George Ingle at the corner of Benton Avenue and Vine Hill Road. Evidence has been developed confirming that Coronado, Coons, and Ingle were killed by bullets fired from the same handgun. No similar homicides have occurred since Woods’ arrest on December 21st.

Woods, at present, is not charged in any of the three homicides. Those cases remain under active investigation.

Woods received a 28-year sentence in 1998 for a number of robbery offenses in Shelby County. He was paroled into the Nashville community and registered with the Metro Police Department as an ex-convict on August 21, 2006.
