FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 14, 2007

In the three years since the inception of the Special Response Team, this plain clothes versatile SWAT Unit which focuses primarily on high-risk suspects has arrested 1,779 persons and served 2,000 outstanding warrants. The SRT unit’s special training and team approach have proven extremely beneficial in reducing risk and injury to both suspects and officers, during encounters with violent offenders charged with crimes including murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, felony drug possession, robbery, and sex offenses.

Out of the 1,779 arrests, there have only been 13 incidents of use of force by the Special Response Team with the vast majority of suspects surrendering without incident. Notable examples include the October 29 capture of accused double murderer Jason Bobo, who was found hiding in the attic of the home of his former girlfriend. Bobo was taken into custody and later admitted to the execution of two Bellacino’s Pizza employees during a robbery. Earlier that month, one of the TBI’s Ten Most Wanted fugitives, Timothy Lyons, surrendered after SRT officers responded to a tip that he was inside an apartment. He was named in a Davidson County Grand Jury indictment charging attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and felony reckless endangerment.

The SRT Unit’s flexible schedule enables officers to track down violent repeat offenders, serve high-risk search/arrest warrants, and assist with preplanned high-risk operations.
