Efforts are underway to identify the man who was killed in a fiery two-vehicle collision Friday morning on Bell Road.

Japeth Thompson, 19, of University Avenue in Old Hickory, was driving his Dodge Neon south on Bell Road when he crossed the center line and struck a northbound 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck at 9:25 a.m. The Neon caught fire. Citizens managed to pull Thompson to safety, but his unidentified front seat passenger was trapped and died at the scene. Thompson was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition.

The driver of the pickup, Wardell Carter, 39, of Lincoya Bay Drive, was transported to Summit Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

There was no evidence of alcohol involvement or excessive speed at the scene.
