Metro Police patch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 27, 2007

Chief Ronal Serpas today announced that Captain Mike Alexander will succeed retiring Commander Rick Lankford as head of the South Precinct. Alexander's appointment to commander is effective December 1. He will work alongside Lankford during December to ensure a smooth transition.

Lankford, 57, will officially retire in January from a distinguished 35-year career with the Metro Police Department. He has headed the South Precinct for the past 19 years.

"Rick Lankford is a forward-thinking law enforcement professional and friend who has proudly served the citizens of South Nashville and this police department in exemplary fashion," Serpas said. "It has been a true pleasure to work with Rick, and I wish him all the best in his retirement."

Alexander, 38, is a 16-year police department veteran who was promoted to captain and assigned as a field supervisor in October 2006. Prior to his promotion to captain, Alexander spent his career in patrol at the South, West, and Hermitage precincts.

"Mike Alexander has proven himself to be a highly-dedicated, respected, and committed leader in this police department," Serpas said. "He is very anxious to begin his partnership with South Nashville's residents and businesses. I have every confidence Mike will do very well in his new assignment."

Serpas today also announced the promotion of Lieutenant Randy Hickerson to captain effective December 1. Hickerson, 42, a 19-year police department veteran, will become a field supervisor.

"Randy is a well-rounded supervisor who has spent his tenure as a patrol officer and supervisor, training academy instructor, and narcotics supervisor," Serpas said. "He is well-suited to be a field supervisor."

Also effective December 1, Captain Rich Foley, presently a field supervisor, will assume oversight of the Metropolitan Park Police as part of a memorandum of understanding between the police and parks departments.
