FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 24, 2007

A tragic accident this afternoon on 25th Avenue on the Vanderbilt University campus claimed the life of an eight-year-old boy who stepped into the path of an Allied Cab Company minivan.

Max Coppinger Nance was struck by the minivan at 2:15 p.m. while crossing 25th Avenue near Jess Neely Drive on his way to the Vanderbilt football game. Max was rushed to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the collision.

Max was going to the game with an eight-year-old friend, the friend’s five-year-old brother, and the friend’s mother. The friend’s father intended to drop the four off and then go home. He stopped his Toyota Camry in a northbound lane of 25th Avenue to let everyone out. Max exited the rear passenger side door and ran around the rear of the Camry into the southbound lane of traffic where he was struck by the cab. The on scene investigation showed that the cab driver, Mekuanint Tsega Kelifa, 26, was not at fault.

Max lived on Sterling Road and was a 3rd grader at Julia Green Elementary School.
