Hermitage Precinct detectives this morning charged James Gordon Coons, III, with the overnight stabbing death of his wife inside the couple’s Chateau Terrace apartment at 344 Bell Road.
Rebecca Coons, 35, was found dead on the floor between the kitchen and living room when emergency responders arrived.
James Coons, 37, called 911 at 12:54 a.m. and said that he had stabbed his wife. He was on the telephone talking to Mobile Crisis when officers got to the apartment. At the scene, Coons said that he stabbed his wife as the result of an argument. He claimed to have blacked out and said he called 911 after he regained his senses.
During an interview with detectives, Coons said that he and his wife had been arguing for a long period of time and that he had become angry. He told detectives he didn’t remember stabbing the victim.
James Coons has a lengthy arrest history which includes an aggravated assault charge for kicking and punching Rebecca Coons in the face in November 2002. He was convicted of misdemeanor domestic assault and was ordered to spend six months in jail. He was also arrested in August 2005 for harassing his wife.
Coons is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond on a charge of criminal homicide.
