FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 23, 2007

Sex Crimes detectives have determined that a Somali national arrested early today on 1st Avenue South at Carroll Street is an alleged serial rapist.

Farhan Ibrahim Mahamed, 30, of 2706 Glenrose Avenue, is charged with four counts of aggravated rape and one count of rape involving three women. Two of the women were attacked overnight. The third occurred on September 26.

At 9 p.m. last night, a 30-year-old woman said she was walking on Murfreesboro Pike to a nearby store when Mahamed drove up and offered her a ride. Due to the heavy rain, she accepted. The victim said Mahamed then drove her to a pavilion at Seven Oaks Park, identified himself as an undercover police officer, and told her that he had a gun. He then proceeded to forcibly rape the victim.

At 1:30 a.m. today, Mahamed picked up a 27-year-old woman in the vicinity of Lewis and Lafayette Streets. He drove her to a Seven Oaks Park pavilion, told the victim that he had a gun and was a police officer, and threatened to shoot her if she did not comply with his demands. The victim said Mahamed forcibly raped her before fleeing the area. She ran to a nearby home and called police.

A short time later, the victim in the earlier attack, who was being driven home from the hospital by a police officer, spotted Mahamed’s black Nissan Maxima near 1st Avenue and Carroll Street and identified it as the suspect’s car. Mahamed was stopped, taken into custody, and interviewed. He admitted to raping the two women during the night and was jailed. At midday, detectives once again interviewed Mahamed regarding outstanding rape cases that were similar to last night’s. During that interview, he admitted to assaulting a 32-year-old woman in Seven Oaks Park on September 26 after picking her up on Murfreesboro Pike.

Mahamed blamed his actions on being angry for problems he has experienced since arriving in the United States from Somalia about eight years ago.

Mahamed is being held in lieu of $400,000 bond. His possible connection to other criminal activity remains under investigation. His photograph is not being released at present so as not to jeopardize potential future lineups.
