East Precinct detectives are asking for the community’s assistance as they work to identify the killer of popular Cahal Market owner Classie Wilson.
Wilson, 70, who operated the market at 1618 Cahal Avenue for more than 20 years with her husband, was fatally wounded at approximately 1 p.m. Customers found her behind the counter at 1:10 p.m. and called 911. She had a gunshot wound to the chest.
Witnesses reported that a man entered the market about 12:30 p.m. wanting to buy single cigarettes. Wilson apparently declined his request. The man was later seen pacing in front of the market armed with a pistol. It is suspected that the man reentered the store and confronted Wilson. Several shots were fired, some by the suspect and at least two by Classie Wilson, who was also armed.
The suspect is described as a young black man with a light complexion. He is approximately 6’1” tall and has a shaved head that was covered today by a blue bandana. He was wearing a white T-shirt and baggy blue jean shorts.
Anyone knowing the suspect’s identity is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward.
