Detectives are working to identify a man who raped a 22-year-old woman at knifepoint in the Bicentennial Mall early this morning.
The suspect is described as a homeless black man who appears to be in his late 40s to early 50s. He is approximately six feet tall with a thin build, short hair, and goatee. He was wearing a black sweater with several t-shirts underneath, dark pants, and white tennis shoes.
The victim was walking home from a downtown club when the suspect asked her for a cigarette on 5th Avenue North. She gave him one and he went to a park bench.
The woman proceeded to walk into the amphitheatre area of Bicentennial Mall. The suspect approached her from behind, threw her to the ground, held a knife to her throat, and raped her. She resisted, but the suspect repeatedly punched and kicked her in the head and body.
The victim walked to a nearby building, from where police were called. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment and has now been released.
Anyone seeing or coming into contact with a man fitting the suspect’s description is urged to immediately call the Emergency Communications Center at 862-8600.
