Outstanding police work by East Precinct Sergeant Jeff Bauer and Central Precinct Officer Ryan Scott led to the arrest of two robbery suspects early this morning.
Steven Smith, Jr., 21, of Spring Street, and David Hornsby, 24, of Anderson Lane, are accused of robbing a man outside the White Castle restaurant at 2201 Dickerson Pike at 2 a.m.
The victim was walking in the area when the suspects allegedly drove up and asked him for a cigarette. When he refused, the men became belligerent. The victim tried to run away on foot, but the suspects followed him in their car until Smith jumped out and tackled the man.
The victim’s wallet and backpack were stolen.
The suspects left in a Pontiac Sunfire. A short time later, Sergeant Bauer alertly spotted the getaway car. He and Officer Scott stopped the Pontiac on Spring Street where both men were taken into custody.
The victim’s stolen property was recovered from the car.
Smith is charged with robbery and resisting arrest. He is being held in lieu of $45,000 dollars bond.
Hornsby is charged with robbery and is being held in lieu of $40,000 dollars bond. His arrest history reflects a burglary conviction.
