The elderly woman found stabbed to death in her home this morning is identified as Mary Margaret Smith, 82, of 14th Avenue North.
North Precinct detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her murder.
Smith shared the home with her grandson, Timothy Smith, 27. He was taken by his mother to the Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute this morning after he phoned her from a nearby location. She became concerned for Mary Margaret Smith’s welfare and contacted police to check on the elderly woman. Police found her body inside the home at 9 a.m.
Mary Margaret Smith was Timothy Smith’s paternal grandmother.
Timothy Smith is currently undergoing an evaluation at M.T.M.H.I.
Detectives are working to determine what, if any, role Timothy Smith may have had in the homicide.
