Metro Police patch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 24, 2007

Chief Ronal Serpas has been chosen by the Justice Department as one of a small number of American police chiefs to represent the United States in a discussion with the Israeli Ministry of Public Security on “Policing in the Years of Terrorism and Beyond.”

Chief Serpas will travel to Jerusalem for the symposium that will be held October 22nd and 23rd.

The chiefs will engage in a discussion with the Israelis on what has changed and must change in policing as a result of new homeland security concerns. The participants will work to identify major trends and changes that have occurred as a result of the threat of terrorism in the world, examine how those changes impact law enforcement and the community, and identify issues/concerns that require further research.

“Terrorism and ways law enforcement can assist in combating it are now major issues in American cities, while the Israelis have been dealing with those concerns for many years,” Chief Serpas said. “I look forward to an exchange of ideas that I believe will aid in the security of Nashville, the United States, and Israel into the future.”

The trip is being funded by the National Institute of Justice, a component of the U.S. Justice Department, which has been studying the terrorism threat to local and international law enforcement for the past two years.
