FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 23, 2007

Officers today arrested a 13-year-old 8th grader at Brick Church Middle School for having a nine-millimeter semi-automatic pistol in his locker.

A student told a teacher that the 13-year-old had a gun. He was called out of class and Officer Patricia Estes patted him down. Inside one of the 8th grader’s pockets were two bullets. The school’s principal then conducted a search of the 13-year-old’s locker and found the pistol along with a separate clip containing five rounds inside a Spiderman notebook.

The 13-year-old said that a friend asked him to hold the gun. Youth Services detectives and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are following up on the case. ATF agents are tracing the gun through its serial number in an effort to determine its last owner and how it wound up in the hands of a teenager.

The 13-year-old was charged at Juvenile Court with carrying a gun on school property.
