FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 21, 2007

East Precinct and Youth Services detectives are investigating this afternoon’s stabbing of a 13-year-old Gra-Mar Middle School student on Matthews Avenue.

Denzel Jones was standing outside with several other persons shortly after 1:30 p.m. when another Gra-Mar student, who is believed to be 14, rode up on a bicycle. The 14-year-old was armed with what was described as a steak-type knife and stabbed Jones twice in the left arm and once in the abdomen. The stabbing apparently resulted from an altercation the two had at school yesterday or today.

Jones was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His injuries are not life-threatening.

The 14-year-old suspect has been identified. Detectives are working to locate him.
