FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 17, 2007

Youth Services detectives are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a woman believed responsible for the death of her seven-week-old nephew.

Mario Plafex was admitted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center on July 16 suffering from a severe head injury, fractured ribs, and a broken leg. He died on July 30.

Arrest warrants charging Marisol Alvarado, 26, with aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect were issued on July 24. Alvarado, who is last known to have lived on Whispering Oaks Place, is believed to be trying to hide from law enforcement. The charges against her will be upgraded to homicide.

Mario Plafex was born June 7 at General Hospital to Alvarado’s sister-in-law, Ana Granados. Granados had the child while she was being held in Davidson County on a felony marijuana charge and allowed Alvarado to take him home.

Youth Services Detective Selene Julia began the investigation into the cause of Mario’s injuries on July 16. Through interviews with Alvarado and others, Julia determined that Alvarado violently shook Mario because of his crying and threw him into the air while he was in a prone position.

During the investigation, the Department of Children’s Services determined that Alvarado’s three children, ages four years, two years and six months, should live with a relative. She violated the safety plan by picking up the children. Their present whereabouts are unknown, although Alvarado could be seeking refuge from members of Nashville’s Latino community who likely do not know that she is wanted.

Anyone seeing Alvarado or knowing her whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and qualify for a cash reward.
