Metro Police patch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 10, 2007

A couple believed responsible for scores of automobile burglaries and garage thefts in the Joelton, Lickton Pike and Goodlettsville areas between May and this week are now behind bars.

Michael Shane Vanderpool, 28, of Justice Road in Ashland City, and Michelle Louise Medina, 40, of Mason Road in LaVergne, had been identified as potential suspects and were taken into custody Thursday afternoon in the Joelton area during a traffic stop by Officer Emmett Hunt.

Investigation by North Precinct Detective Carney White shows that Vanderpool and Medina were cruising through residential areas between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. looking for vulnerable parked cars and open garages. They targeted cars that contained purses, cellular telephones, radar detectors, and other merchandise. Taken from open garages were power tools and at least one generator. Detectives found that the couple used stolen credit cards and checks quickly at 24-hour discount stores and purchased, among other things, an LCD television and other electronic equipment. The merchandise and stolen tools were fenced for cash or drugs. Detectives have had success in recovering many of the stolen items.

The couple is under investigation for similar activity in Montgomery, Wilson, Robertson, and Sumner Counties. For now, they are charged in Nashville with two counts of auto burglary. Additional charges will be placed later.

Detectives urge citizens to remove all valuables from their vehicles, even when parking at home. This case underscores the risk of leaving purses, checkbooks and other items in vehicles during the overnight hours.
