Former basketball star Ron Mercer today surrendered at police headquarters and was booked on a charge of misdemeanor assault in connection with an April fight at a Nashville strip club. Also surrendering today was Mercer’s friend, Robert Edward Johnson, who was booked on a charge of felony aggravated assault for stabbing a security guard during the fight.
The investigation by Central Precinct Detective Scott Carter revealed that Mercer got into a verbal argument with a dancer at Anthony’s Show Place on April 21st and was asked to leave by security guard Keith Battle. Mercer was physically escorted to the rear door by Battle. Johnson, who was in the club with Mercer, followed. A physical fight began between Mercer, Johnson, and Battle. Johnson admits to stabbing Battle in the right side and right shoulder with a knife. A second security guard, William Beels, Jr., 32, attempted to break up the fight and was punched in the face by Mercer.
Battle, 26, was not critically hurt. He was treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Mercer, 31, of Allenwood Drive, was released on $1,500 bond. Johnson, 34, also of Allenwood Drive, is free on $5,000 bond.
