FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 16, 2007

The man killed this afternoon in a pickup truck-crane collision on Old Hickory Boulevard has been identified as Rodger D. Matthews, 56, of Joelton.

The crane driver, Kenneth Sikora, 34, of Murfreesboro, was traveling on I-24 West (north of downtown) and exited at Old Hickory Boulevard. Sikora told investigators his brakes failed and he was unable to stop at the stop sign at the bottom of the ramp. The crane continued into the middle of the intersection where it crashed into the driver’s side of a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by Matthews.

Matthews was pronounced dead at Skyline Medical Center. Two other passengers were in the Dodge. Larry Desheles, 45, of Joelton, is in stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Luke Matthews, 7, of Chapmansboro, was not injured and was released to his mother. The crane driver was not injured.

It does not appear that alcohol or speed was a factor in this fatal accident. The investigation is continuing.
