Saturday morning’s Repentance Walk from Centennial Park to LP Field will result in the closure of Elliston Place and Church Street, including the I-40 Church Street ramps, beginning at 6:45 a.m. and continuing for the duration of the three-mile walk. An estimated 7,000 persons are expected to participate in the event. Forty-eight off-duty Metro police officers have been retained by the organizers to manage the route as approved by the city.
First Avenue north of Church Street and Woodland Street (including the Woodland Street Bridge) to LP Field will also be closed for the walk, which is expected to conclude by 9 a.m.
The walk precedes The Call prayer event at LP Field, which is scheduled Saturday from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Tens of thousands of persons from Tennessee and other states are expected to attend. Free parking at LP Field will be available on a first come, first served basis. Once the lots are full, off-duty officers retained by the organizers will direct citizens to the downtown area to find parking.
Television monitors are being set up outside LP Field in case attendance at tomorrow’s event exceeds stadium capacity.
