Hit and Run Unit investigators are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the driver of a vehicle who ran over a homeless man sometime between 11:30 p.m. and midnight Monday, June 18.
Wilbert Lee Helms, 69, was found seriously injured at 12:00 a.m. by a Central Precinct patrol officer on 8th Avenue North at Taylor Street. Investigators said Helms appeared to be extremely intoxicated at the time of the accident and may have been lying in the roadway when he was struck. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died Wednesday from injuries that appear to be consistent with having been run over by a vehicle that did not have time to stop.
Anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or anyone with information on the vehicle involved, is urged to contact the police department’s Traffic Unit at 862-7738.
