FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 24, 2007

The would-be armed robber who was shot after carrying a loaded AK-47 rifle into Surtidora La Paz Market at 819 Main Street Saturday night carried no identification and his name is not yet known. He is of Hispanic descent and remains hospitalized in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The rifleman and another man entered the market at 7:10 p.m. When the clerk, who was in the store with his pregnant wife and young son, saw the rifle pointed at him, he pulled a pistol and opened fire. The would-be robber was hit four times and collapsed in the parking lot. His accomplice, also of Hispanic descent, ran to a car, described as a silver Nissan Altima, and fled.

It is believed that the accomplice had been in the store about 15 minutes prior to the gunman entering. Surveillance images from the store are under review as detectives attempt to locate the second man.

“John Doe” arrest warrants have been issued charging attempted aggravated robbery against both individuals.

Records reflect that the market clerk has a handgun carry permit. His name is presently being withheld for safety reasons.
