FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 17, 2007

South Precinct detectives believe the man killed early today at theHarding Inn at 350 Harding Place was shot in self-defense.

Michael Darvin, 31, went to the Hamilton Inn at Briley Parkway at Interstate 40 late last night and made a crack cocaine sale. While he was there, he was robbed bythree individuals. He thenreturned to theHarding Inn on Harding Place where he was staying. Less than an hour after the robbery, Darvin saw three men in the hallway who he recognized as robbing him earlier. Those three demanded entry into Darvin’s room. At least two of them were armed. Darvin pulled hisown gun and shot two of the three men, he said, in self-defense.

Dead is Anthony Poole, 19, ofNashville. Wounded in the shoulder was Steven Newsome, 26, of Wallace Road. The third man with them, Kenzo Quezergue, 18, was not injured. Newsom drove to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with Poole and Quezergue alsoin the car. Poole diedshortly after arrival. Newsome was treated and released.

Newsome and Quezergue are being charged withaggravated robbery for what occurred at the Hamilton Inn.

The investigation thus farsupports Darvin’s assertion that he shot Poole and Newsome in self-defense. Darvin remained at the Super 8 until police arrived and told responding officers that he shot the men. No charges are being placed against Darvin at present. The investigation, however, is continuing.
