FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 11, 2007

East Precinct detectives have identified 14-year-old Ronkeivius Charles Williamson as the person suspected of fatally shooting Martin Methodist College star basketball player Chauncey Shelton at 225 Treutland Avenue Thursday night.

Williamson was taken into custody without incident at 10:50 a.m. today at the Institute of Learning Research on Clarksville Pike. Williamson was playing basketball when officers arrived.

An adult woman who is alleged to have given Williamson the pistol moments before Shelton was shot has also been arrested. Vivian Yvonne Armstrong, 35, was taken into custody at 5 a.m. at her 619-B North 2nd Street home. She is charged with facilitation of criminal homicide and is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond.

Shelton, 22, of Redford, Michigan, had stopped at 225 Treutland with his stepfather to visit friends. Around 7:30 p.m., Vivian Armstrong arrived in the back yard of the home with her daughters, Williamson and other juveniles who had apparently been embroiled in an ongoing dispute with juveniles who lived at 225 Treutland. A fight broke out in the backyard between two groups of girls and others. Witnesses reported that Shelton was working to end the fight and separate the parties when Vivian Armstrong pulled a pistol from her waistband and handed it to Ronkeivius Williamson. Witnesses said that Williamson shot Shelton in the chest. Armstrong, Williamson and others then fled the scene.

Shelton was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died during surgery.

Vivian Armstrong has an adult arrest history dating back to 1990. The 35 charges include possession of marijuana for resale, possession of schedule II drugs for resale, probation violation, aggravated assault, theft, auto theft, use of a stolen license plate, misdemeanor assault, disorderly conduct, indecent exposure and driving on a suspended license.
