FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 10, 2007

The man killed Wednesday afternoon when his Chevrolet pickup truck was struck by a white Ford pickup truck pulling a trailer on Interstate 40 is identified as Stanley Matlock, 60, of Kings Court.

Matlock was driving his truck, which also had a trailer attached, east on Interstate 40 near McCrory Lane at 3 p.m. when witnesses reported that the driver of the Ford attempted to merge in front of Matlock’s truck. The Ford’s trailer made contact with Matlock’s truck at least twice before Matlock was forced off the road into the median. It appears Matlock over-corrected in an attempt to return to the roadway, which caused his truck to travel back across the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40. His pickup struck the guardrail before coming to a stop on the Interstate. All four occupants of the Chevrolet, including Matlock, were ejected. They were not wearing seatbelts. Investigators say the use of seatbelts would have made a significant difference for the occupants.

Matlock was pronounced dead at Vanderbilt University Medical Center at 4 p.m. yesterday. His three passengers, Shawn Harding, 27, of Lellyett Street, Edward Chambers, 47, of Eden Street, and Tamika Carey, 29, of Willow Trace Drive, were transported to other hospitals with non-critical injuries.

The white Ford pickup truck did not stop. A witness provided a partial tag number of 838 DE 1. It was towing an open trailer. Anyone with information on the truck is urged to call the Traffic Section’s Hit and Run Unit at 862-7713.
