The man fatally wounded early today while inside his apartment in the E building of the Dominion House complex on Linbar Drive is identified as Jose Miguel Avendano, 24. Avendano suffered a gunshot wound to the neck at approximately 3 a.m. while apparently looking out his bedroom window in response to gunfire in the parking lot.
About an hour prior to the shooting, two residents of the complex caught two men attempting to break into a Honda Civic parked in front of the E building. A confrontation and brief scuffle took place and the car burglars got away. When the gunman or gunmen arrived in the parking lot, they opened fire primarily on an upstairs apartment in the E building. One of the rounds traveled through the bedroom window of Avendano’s lower-level apartment and struck him in the neck. The Honda was also hit by gunfire.
Avendano and the persons living above him were not connected to the Honda and were not involved in the earlier confrontation involving the car burglary.
South Precinct detectives are now working to identify the car burglars and the gunman or gunmen, who may be the same individuals.
