FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 28, 2007

The woman killed this afternoon in a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 65 North near Armory Drive is identified as Kristin Westerfield, 18, of Brentwood, Tennessee.

Westerfield was one of six occupants, four adults and two juveniles, in an Oldsmobile minivan driven by Dennis McEwan, 19, also of Brentwood. McEwan was driving north in the far left lane of Interstate 65 around 2:20 p.m. in a heavy downpour when the minivan fishtailed and struck another vehicle in the next lane. This caused the minivan to slam into the concrete center dividing wall on the driver’s side.

Westerfield was seated behind the minivan’s driver. She was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. There were no other serious injuries in the accident.

The second vehicle did not stop and there are no known witnesses at this time.

It does not appear that Westerfield was wearing a seatbelt.

Excessive speed for road/weather conditions appears to be the contributing factor to this fatal crash.
