FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 16, 2007

East Precinct detectives in the past 24 hours have arrested three teenagers in connection with last Sunday’s murder of Jose Flores at 868 Joseph Avenue.

Terrence Simpson, 16, of Hancock Street, was booked on a charge of criminal homicide early today. Detectives had developed Simpson as a suspect in the case. During questioning, he admitted to taking part in the attempted robbery that resulted in Flores’ death.

This afternoon, undercover officers taking part in the police department’s Operation Safer Streets initiative came upon Antwan Whitehead, 15, and Chris Northern, 17, at the corner of Joseph Avenue and Grace Street. Whitehead, of North 2nd Street, and Northern, of Joseph Avenue, had been developed as persons of interest in the case. During interviews, which concluded this evening, they admitted to taking part in the attempted robbery at Flores’ home. Whitehead and Northern are also being charged with criminal homicide.

Flores, 30, and several family members were outside barbecuing at 9 p.m. Sunday when several armed teenagers wearing coverings over their faces appeared and ordered everyone into the house. The suspects demanded money and car keys. At least one of the victims struggled with one of the robbers. Someone yelled, “Police,” and the suspects fled. As they did, one of them fired a single shot from the back yard. The bullet went through a window and struck Flores in the back. He died during surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

At least one other suspect in this case remains at large and efforts are continuing to locate him.
