A woman who appeared to have been kidnapped overnight during the carjacking of her ex-boyfriend’s SUV now admits to setting the whole thing up.
Chenique C. Beasley, 26, of University Court, is jailed on a charge of carjacking. Her bond is set at $5,000.
Beasley and her ex-boyfriend, Terald Howse, 38, were sitting in his parked Ford Explorer talking at Charles E. Davis Boulevard and Carroll Street just after midnight when two gunmen approached from an alley and ordered Howse out of the vehicle. Both men then got into the Explorer and Beasley drove it away.
Officers responded to the scene and, based on Howse’s report, presumed that Beasley had been kidnapped as part of the carjacking. Three hours later, Beasley called police to say that she had returned to the area and was fine. During questioning by Hermitage Precinct Detective Robert Shotwell, Beasley eventually admitted that she set up Howse because she suspected him of stalking her. Beasley said she intended to scare Howse, but that things went too far.
Detectives are still working to confirm the identities of the gunmen.
