Youth Services detectives have charged a 21-year-old mother and her 19-year-old live-in boyfriend with aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect after the woman’s 31-month-old son was found to have extensive injuries and bruising over several areas of his body.
Anthony Westbrooks is in very critical condition and is on life support at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
Charged are Aja Westbrooks and Larry Cook, II.
Officers and an ambulance were called to Westbrooks’ apartment at 544 South 6th Street just before noon last Thursday on a report that Anthony had injured himself and was having difficulty breathing after falling down several steps inside the home. Anthony was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and was admitted in critical condition with bruising and a brain injury.
The investigation reveals that the injuries are inconsistent with falling down steps.
Cook said the fall occurred while Aja Westbrooks was gone to a nearby store. He said that he worked to resuscitate Anthony and then ran to alert his mother. Aja Westbrooks called 911 while on the way back to the apartment.
Aja Westbrooks and Cook were charged Friday night and are being held in lieu of $75,000 bond each.
