The shoplifter fatally wounded at 11 p.m. Friday by a clerk at the Shell Market at 197 Haywood Lane is identified as Richard Huddleston, 22, who is last known to have lived on East Trinity Lane.
The clerk who shot Huddleston is identified as Jefferson Bilbrey, 45, of South Nashville.
The investigation to this point shows that Huddleston was in the process of stealing beer and ball caps inside the store when he was confronted by Bilbrey. A brief struggle between the two ensued. Huddleston reached into his shirt as if he was going for a weapon. He then ran outside the store to a car that was parked near the gas pumps. Bilbrey followed and wound up firing his .38 caliber revolver twice at Huddleston. Huddleston was hit in the upper torso. He was transported to Southern Hills Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Huddleston was not armed.
Bilbrey does have a valid handgun carry permit. The investigation is continuing. The completed case file will be sent to the District Attorney's Office for review. The Davidson County Grand Jury will likely decide whether any threat perceived by Bilbrey justified his use of deadly force. No charges have been placed against Bilbrey at present.
