Metro Police patch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 1, 2007

The armed robber fatally wounded by Metro Police Canine Officer Joe Shelton late Wednesday night is identified as Charles Jamie Walden, 18, of 229 Capitol View Avenue. Walden’s accomplice in the robbery of the Mapco convenience market at 2813 Dickerson Pike is identified as Allen Christopher Marks, 16, of 306 Brewer Drive.

Walden and Marks, with hoods over their heads and bandanas over their faces, entered the market at 11:45 p.m. with pistols drawn and demanded money from the two clerks. As the robbery was taking place, Officer Shelton drove by the market in his marked police car and noticed what appeared to be suspicious activity at the front counter. Shelton turned around and pulled onto the outer edge of the store’s parking lot. At that point, he could clearly see that a robbery was in progress.

Walden and Marks saw the police car and ran to the rear of the market. That gave one of the clerks the opportunity to flee the store through the front door. Shelton, not knowing who the clerk was, ordered him to the ground. The clerk complied.

Moments later, Walden ran out the front of the building. Walden was still carrying a large handgun, which he held close to his upper body. Shelton ordered Walden to halt. Walden didn’t, and his pistol was pointed in Shelton’s direction. Shelton fired on Walden in self-defense with his AR-15 rifle (rifles are part of canine officers’ assigned weaponry). Walden was hit in the neck and fell to the pavement. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A short time later, Marks exited the market with his hands in the air. He was taken into custody without incident. The second clerk then came out of the store.

Walden and Marks received less than $15 in the robbery.

Marks has been charged at juvenile detention with two counts of aggravated robbery.

Also charged with two counts of aggravated robbery is Andrew Ray Adwell, 23, of 211 Capitol View Avenue. Adwell admitted to detectives that he helped plan the robbery by casing the store and advising Walden and Marks about the number of employees. As the robbery took place, Adwell, armed with a gun, waited in an adjoining parking lot.

Officer Shelton, 42, is an 18-year police department veteran. He is on routine administrative assignment while the investigation continues.
