North Precinct and Domestic Violence detectives have arrested Anthony J. McDowell for critically wounding his girlfriend inside her Clare Avenue home at 11:15 a.m.
An arrest warrant has been issued charging McDowell, 26, with attempted criminal homicide. He was taken into custody in the 2300 block of Alameda Street.
McDowell’s girlfriend, Toni Williams, 29, suffered gunshot wounds to the head and is in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Williams’ seven-year-old daughter said that McDowell arrived at the home and went with her mother into a bedroom to have a conversation. While the two were in the bedroom, the daughter said she heard a gunshot, after which McDowell came out and left through the front door. The seven-year-old said her mother followed him and attempted to hold the front door shut to keep him out. The girl said McDowell forced his way back inside and fired additional rounds into Toni Williams.
Williams’ daughter said that her mother met McDowell in August. Counselors were called to assist the seven-year-old, her four-year-old sister, and their four-year-old cousin, all of whom were in the home at the time of the gunfire.
McDowell’s prior arrest history includes charges of altering registration of a vehicle, driving on a suspended license, murder, reckless driving, and theft.
